When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Dalhart
Building permits are required for new residential, new commercial, carports, fences, remodels, roofs, manufactured-home sites, HVAC, plumbing, electrical work, sprinklers, sewer taps, and digging in city right-of-way. A remodel permit is required if the project requires a wall to be opened, or when plumbing and/or electrical are exposed.

- If the house is your homestead, you may acquire plumbing and electrical permits yourself and perform the work yourself, but the work still must be inspected. Only licensed plumbers and electricians can work on property that is not your homestead.
- Contractor requirements
- Contractors must be registered with the City of Dalhart. Registration costs $100 per year. Roofing contractors also must be registered with the city to repair or replace a roof on a building that is not the contractor's homestead. Licensed plumbers and electricians are required for non-homestead plumbing and electrical work.

- 01 Confirm the property is inside Dalhart city limits and in the Hartley County portion.
- 02 Request the permit by calling the permit clerk at (806) 244-5511 ext. 3210 or ext. 3213, or by emailing the Code Department.
- 03 Submit plans to the inspector either in person at City Hall or via email. Plans must comply with the 2015 International Building Codes.
- 04 Pay the applicable permit and trade-inspection fees. Electrical inspection payment is due when the permit is issued.
- 05 Complete required inspections and coordinate any additional review directly with the Code Department before final approval.
