When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Hereford
The Building and Zoning Department enforces building-related codes, reviews plans, issues permits, and inspects construction within city limits. The city has adopted the 2018 International Building Code, 2018 International Residential Code, 2018 International Plumbing Code, 2018 International Mechanical Code, 2018 International Fuel Gas Code, 2018 International Energy Conservation Code, 2018 International Existing Building Code, 2020 National Electrical Code, and 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code.
- Exempt Minor electrical tasks such as replacing fuses, lamp sockets, switches, or receptacles
- Exempt Homeowners may perform electrical work in their own qualifying single-unit residence under ordinance conditions
Note: No Hereford-specific public exempt-work handout was found for general building permits. Because Hereford adopted the model building and residential codes by reference, ordinary exempt work likely tracks the permit-exemption sections in the adopted IBC and IRC. This includes small detached accessory structures within model-code thresholds, ordinary finish work such as painting, some minor sidewalks or paving, and certain low retaining walls. Confirm with the city before relying on a claimed exemption.
