When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Frankfort
Building permits are required for new construction, additions, remodeling, and building removal/demolition in the Town of Frankfort. Setback variances are required if the proposed project does not meet zoning setback requirements.

- Permit validity
- Building permits do not expire as long as work is started within 90 days and is continuous. If work is abandoned or discontinued for an extended period, permit validity may be affected.
- Contractor requirements
- State registration under SDCL Chapter 36-21C (administered by SD Department of Labor and Regulation) is required for residential contractors. Electrical and plumbing work requires a state-licensed contractor regardless of project size. State electrical inspection is required for all electrical installations (South Dakota Electrical Commission, 605-773-3573).
