When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Rapid City
Required for all structural development and for any change of use of a structure or property. Applies to new construction, additions, alterations, and demolition within city limits.
- Exempt One-story detached accessory structures (tool and storage sheds) with a floor area of 120 square feet or less, provided they are not located within a required setback or easement
- Exempt Fences not over 7 feet high
- Exempt Painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops, and similar finish work
- Exempt Temporary motion picture, television, and theater stage sets and scenery
- Exempt Prefabricated swimming pools accessory to one- or two-family dwellings with a capacity under 5,000 gallons that are less than 24 inches deep
- Exempt Swings and other playground equipment for one- and two-family dwellings
- Exempt Window awnings supported by an exterior wall
