When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Ward
A building permit is required for all construction and alterations within the Town of Ward.

- Homeowners may act as their own builder under South Carolina Code § 40-59-260 but must obtain a building permit marked 'owner-builder'.
- Contractor requirements
- General contractors and mechanical contractors must hold an active South Carolina license administered by SC LLR Contractor's Licensing Board (CLB@llr.sc.gov, 803-896-4686). Residential builders must be registered with SC Residential Builders Commission (contact.rbc@llr.sc.gov, 803-896-4696).
