When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for South Kingstown
All new construction, additions, renovations (except minor repairs), electrical, plumbing, mechanical, demolitions, pools, decks, sheds, and similar work.
- Exempt One-story detached accessory structures not exceeding 200 square feet
- Exempt Fences not over 6 feet high
- Exempt Retaining walls not over 32 inches
- Exempt Ordinary repairs not involving code violations (minor repairs)
- Exempt Painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops, and similar finish work
- Exempt Replacement window sash installations
- Exempt Clearing stoppages or repairing leaks in plumbing without rearrangement
- Exempt Portable heating, ventilation, and cooling appliances
- Exempt Lamp, receptacle, device, or fixture replacements at permanently installed receptacles

- 01 Download and review permit requirements for your project type from southkingstownri.gov/419/Building-Permits.
- 02 Create account or log in at permits.ri.gov; select South Kingstown.
- 03 Choose permit type; complete application online.
- 04 Upload required documents: site plan, construction drawings, contractor registration, trade license.
- 05 Pay fees online.
- 06 Plans reviewed by Building Official.
- 07 Permit issued upon approval.
- 08 Post permit card on site.
- 09 Call (401) 789-9331 ext. 1225 to schedule inspections (minimum 24 hours notice preferred); note that inspections CANNOT be scheduled online through the permitting system.
- 10 Certificate of Occupancy or Completion issued after final inspection.
