Permit triggers and exempt work for Warwick
A permit is required for new construction, additions, alterations, repairs, demolition, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work unless specifically exempted by the Rhode Island State Building Code. Roofing, siding, decks, pools, sheds over 200 sq ft, garages, and similar projects require permits.

- Exempt Playground equipment accessory to a one- or two-family dwelling
- Exempt Prefabricated swimming pools accessory to a one- or two-family dwelling that are less than 24 inches deep and do not exceed 5,000 gallons
- Exempt Swings and other playground equipment accessory to one- and two-family dwellings
Note: All exemptions follow the Rhode Island State Building Code. Exempt work must still comply with applicable zoning ordinances. Check with the Building Department for project-specific guidance.

- Building code
- Rhode Island State Building Code (RISBC-1), based on IBC 2018 with state amendments; RISBC-2 (IRC 2018 with amendments) for one- and two-family dwellings. Effective February 1, 2022.

- Permits expire if work is not commenced within 180 days of issuance or if work is suspended or abandoned for 180 days.
- Owner-builder
- Homeowners may pull their own permits for work on their primary residence. They must personally perform the work or directly supervise it and cannot use the permit to do work for hire.

- All contractors must be registered with the Rhode Island CRLB (crb.ri.gov). Electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work require licensed tradespeople (Class A/B electrician, master plumber, master pipe fitter) in addition to CRLB registration.
