Application Process
- Determine whether the project is within the Bristol Historic District. If so, obtain a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Bristol Historic District Commission (BHDC) before or concurrent with the building permit application. Contact Historic District Coordinator Nicholas Toth at 401-253-7000 for guidance.
- Determine whether zoning approval or variance is required. Contact the Zoning Department at https://www.bristolri.gov/195/Zoning.
- Log in to the OpenGov portal at https://bristolri.portal.opengov.com/ and select the appropriate permit type.
- Complete the application, upload construction drawings, and provide contractor CRLB registration number.
- Submit the application. Depending on project type, the submission may be routed to the Tax Assessor, Water Quality, Planning, Zoning, and/or Fire Department for review.
- If the application is incomplete or deficient, the Building Official will notify the applicant in writing through the portal with required corrections.
- Once approved, pay the required fee. Fees are based on project valuation under the Rhode Island statewide permit fee schedule (510-RICR-00-00-21).
- Permit is issued electronically. Post the permit conspicuously at the job site before work begins.
- Schedule required inspections through the OpenGov inspection request feature.

General Requirements
A building permit is required for all new construction, additions, alterations, repairs, demolitions, and changes of occupancy. Trade permits (electrical, plumbing, mechanical) are required separately. Work within the historic district also requires BHDC approval.

- Window awnings supported by an exterior wall that do not project more than 54 inches
- Replacement window sash only (full frame + sash replacement requires a permit)
- Ordinary minor repairs that do not involve structural, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical work
Important: Work within the Bristol Historic District may still require BHDC review even if a building permit is not required. Exemption from permit requirements does not authorize non-compliant work.
