Unincorporated Butler County

Countywide building-permit requirements do not exist as a separate county program for unincorporated Butler County. Building permits are issued by the relevant municipality. Permit triggers depend on the actual municipality.

Note: Building permits are not issued at the county level for unincorporated areas. All building permit requirements are determined by the applicable municipality.

Building code

Butler County does not serve as the general UCC permit issuer for countywide building permits. Municipalities enforce the Pennsylvania UCC through their own arrangements.

Contractor requirements

Municipality-specific permit rules apply. For residential home improvement work over $5,000, Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor registration requirements may apply at the state level.

   Identify the actual municipality where the property is located by using the Butler County municipalities directory.

   Apply to that municipality's permit authority, not Butler County, for building permits and inspections.

   If the project also involves subdivision or land development, coordinate with Butler County Economic Development and Planning for county planning review where required.
