When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Canadian County
The county floodplain notice states a permit is required for any development in the floodplain. No public evidence was found of one unified county building permit covering all unincorporated construction outside floodplain and special county permits.
Note: No reliable countywide exempt-work list was found for unincorporated Canadian County. Do not assume work is exempt if the site is in a floodplain, county right-of-way, or subject to septic/state utility approvals.
- Site plan
- Floodplain information for floodplain work
- Additional documents depend on the county permit type and any state agency overlap
- Building code
- No single countywide building code adoption page was located for unincorporated area review; floodplain management is clearly administered locally.
- Contractor requirements
- State trade licensing still applies where Oklahoma requires it; no separate countywide contractor licensing rule was located.
Application process
Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Confirm whether the parcel is inside a municipality or in unincorporated Canadian County.
- 02 Check whether the work is in a mapped floodplain; the county floodplain map states a permit is required for any development in the floodplain.
- 03 Contact Canadian County Floodplain Management or the Permit Office before site work, grading, fill, new structures, substantial improvements, or manufactured home placement in regulated flood areas.
- 04 Obtain the applicable county form or routing instructions; if the project also needs driveway, utility crossing, septic, state highway, or OWRB/DEQ approvals, the county may direct the applicant to those agencies.
- 05 Submit the completed permit package and any site/floodplain documents to the Permit Office at 210 N Choctaw Ave or the Commissioner's Office at 215 N Evans Ave, in person or via mail.
- 06 Floodplain permits are due on the last Tuesday of each month. Right-of-way permits are due each Tuesday by 4:00 PM.
- 07 Wait for review and any requested corrections, then obtain approval before work begins. The floodplain board meets on the first Monday of each month (first Tuesday if Monday is a holiday). Right-of-way permits are reviewed at the weekly Monday BOCC meeting.
