When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Trumbull County
Permits are required for new homes, decks, patios, patio covers, chimneys, fireplaces, garages, pole barns, ventilation, heating or air-conditioning supply or exhaust, swimming pools, storage sheds over 200 square feet, electrical wiring, room additions, dormers, plumbing changes, furnace and gas system changes, circuit changes, porch wall changes, garage-to-livable conversions, roofing, termite or foundation work, porches, siding, and demolition.

- Permit validity
- Flood Hazard Area Development Permit expires if no work has commenced within one year of issuance.
- Owner-builder
- Owner and occupant of a single-family residence may obtain permits for electrical and HVAC work without a contractor license if the owner signs the affidavit and personally performs the work.
- Contractor requirements
- County electrical registration packet requires a current Ohio electrical license copy, county surety bond, proof of liability insurance of at least $1,000,000, proof of workers compensation compliance, and the county registration fee. County mechanical registration packets also posted.

- 01 Identify the local zoning official for the township or village if the property is in a zoned unincorporated area using the county Obtaining Permits resource (zoning inspectors list).
- 02 Obtain any required zoning clearance or floodplain approval before or alongside county building permit filings.
- 03 Submit the applicable county plan approval and permit application for residential, commercial, electrical, or HVAC work.
- 04 Pay county permit fees, processing fee, and applicable 1% residential or 3% commercial Ohio BBS state assessment.
- 05 Request required inspections through the county inspection request forms.
- 06 Complete all inspections and final approvals before occupancy or closeout.
