Permit triggers and exempt work for Currituck County
Permits are required for single-family dwellings, manufactured homes, additions, accessory structures, bulkheads, alterations over $40,000, structural or load-bearing work, and any work in a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area. Broader code coverage also includes erection, construction, enlargement, installation, alteration, repair, moving, improvement, conversion, or demolition without a permit as authorized by jurisdictional requirements.

- Permit validity
- Building permits expire 6 months after issuance if work has not commenced. After work begins, the permit expires if work stops for more than 12 months.
- Owner-builder
- Owners may build their own house if the project exceeds $40,000, they are not using an unlicensed general contractor, they intend to keep the house for their own use, they schedule every inspection, and they are not constructing a speculative project for sale.
- Contractor requirements
- Trade permits and contractor information are required on county application forms. North Carolina general contractors must be licensed for projects of $40,000 or more.
Application process

- 01 Start with the county Permits and Inspections page or Citizen Self Service portal.
- 02 Create a Citizen Self Service account and request staff linking with a Customer ID before submitting permit applications.
- 03 Assemble the application packet, including completed permit application, permit fees at issuance, construction plans, and site plan.
- 04 Include required supplemental items such as minor stormwater plan and Form SW-001, septic or sewer approval, well permit, CAMA permit, V flood zone certificate, and appointment of lien agent when required.
- 05 Submit the packet through the portal or in-office process.
- 06 County staff review the application for completeness and code compliance.
- 07 When requirements are met and fees are paid, obtain permit issuance.
- 08 Keep one approved set of construction plans on site for inspections.

Additional published fees include $1 technology fee per application, $25/$50 zoning compliance permit (residential/commercial), $100/$150 temporary certificate of occupancy (residential/commercial per space), and $100 commercial plan review.
