Permit triggers and exempt work for Carteret County
A permit is required for frame houses, accessory buildings, garages, decks, porches, docks, and other regulated construction shown on county forms.

Typical processing: 3 to 5 business days for complete applications.
- 01 Obtain Authorization to Construct from Environmental Health if residential wastewater is involved.
- 02 Complete CAMA permits if applicable.
- 03 Prepare the building permit packet and plot plan.
- 04 Submit two sets of building plans for approval.
- 05 County building inspector, zoning official, and floodplain manager review the application.
- 06 Provide a list of all contractors and subcontractors with license numbers.
- 07 When ready for inspections, call the Morehead City Office or Western Office with the permit number.
