When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Anson County
The county office issues permits for building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, manufactured homes, demolition, flood-zone work, signs, and related construction activities regulated by state code and county ordinances.
Note: The county public page reviewed did not publish a stand-alone bullet list of exempt work. State permit exceptions may apply to certain limited low-cost work under N.C.G.S. 160D-1110(c). Even when a state exception may apply, applicants should confirm with the county before starting work, especially for structural changes, additions, change of use, flood-zone work, manufactured homes, and trade systems.
- Septic approval or public sewer authorization
- Two sets of plans or detailed drawings to scale with elevations
- Zoning approval
- Parcel ID and plat if needed
- Erosion approval if over one acre
- Workers compensation proof if required
- Contractor license number if not on file
- Square footage totals
- Power company information
- Building code
- 2018 North Carolina State Building Code and related state codes currently in force
- Permit validity
- County public pages reviewed did not publish a separate expiration statement; permits generally follow NC state administrative code expiration rules unless a local document provides otherwise.
- Owner-builder
- County owner exemption affidavit requires the owner to personally superintend and manage all aspects of the work, be regularly on site and personally present for inspections unless sealed plans create an exception, and occupy the building for 12 months after completion without offering it for rent, lease, or sale during that period.
- Contractor requirements
- NC general contractor license required at $40,000 and above; county permit requirements call for contractor license number if not already on file; proof of workers compensation is required where applicable; electrical contractors must be state licensed.
