When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Rahway
A building permit is required for new construction, alterations, renovations, additions, and structural work.
- Exempt Replacement of kitchen or bathroom cabinets
- Exempt Changing plumbing or electrical fixtures without alteration of plumbing or wiring
- Exempt Replacement of doors and windows in same opening

- Permit validity
- Permit valid for 12 months from date of issuance; must pass inspection within 12 months of last inspection activity.
- Owner-builder
- Homeowners residing in their home may prepare their own drawings; otherwise sealed drawings by licensed professional required.
- Contractor requirements
- Contractors must hold appropriate state licenses, insurance, and workers compensation coverage.

Application process
Typical processing: Several days for most permits; up to 20 working days if extensive plan review required.
- 01 Apply in person at Building Division Office (Monday-Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm).
- 02 Complete UCC Construction Permit Application.
- 03 Submit construction plans and plot plan.
- 04 Obtain Zoning and/or Engineering approval prior to building permit application if required.
- 05 Submit sealed drawings showing work to be performed (homeowners residing in their home may prepare their own drawings).
- 06 Pay permit fees based on cost of alteration/addition/size of structure.
- 07 Receive permit and schedule inspections.
