Permit triggers and exempt work for Schoolcraft County
The county guide routes any structure, structure modification, or addition to the building office. Michigan state code still governs ordinary repair exemptions and permit triggers.
- Exempt Ordinary repairs under Michigan state law
- Exempt Work that does not create a regulated structure, addition, modification, or other code-triggering construction
- Exempt Minor repair activity not affecting structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or safety code elements
- The county permit application is linked from the department page; the zoning permit application requires site plan details, parcel ID, location, current and proposed improvements, water and sewage locations, roads, driveways, parking, and shoreline setbacks when applicable.
- Building code
- Michigan Building Code and Michigan Residential Code are referenced in county materials
Application process
Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Confirm whether the project is a structure, modification, addition, or other regulated work.
- 02 Check related trigger permits first, especially soil erosion, critical dunes, waterward work, driveway or culvert work in a road right-of-way, and well or septic work.
- 03 Submit the county building permit application to the Building Code Administration office in Room 207.
- 04 Use the county zoning permit process first when zoning review is needed, because the zoning application states an approved zoning application must be on file before construction starts or before a building permit is issued.
- 05 Obtain the building permit before work begins.
- 06 Schedule inspections with the county building office as work progresses.
