When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Grand Haven
The city states it reviews and issues building permits for remodeling, additions, siding, and similar work, plus separate electrical, mechanical, and plumbing permits.

- 02 Email the completed application to GHDPSBuilding@grandhaven.org for quickest response, or mail it to Grand Haven Department of Public Safety, 525 Washington Ave, Grand Haven, MI 49417.
- 03 Respond to any review comments and pay assessed permit charges.
- 04 Receive the issued permit and post or keep permit documents on site.
- 05 Complete required building and trade inspections and final approvals before occupancy or project closeout.

Fee schedule
Effective 2025
Building and miscellaneous invoices can be paid online through the city payment system, by phone at 1-855-461-9798, in person at City Hall, or by drop box. The city notes a 3 percent fee charged by the payment service provider.
