When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for McCreary County
All new buildings, additions, change of occupancy, alterations, and significant repairs are subject to 815 KAR 7:120 plan review and the 2015 Kentucky Building Code with 2018 amendments, or 815 KAR 7:125 for one- and two-family dwellings.
Note: McCreary County has not published a standalone exempt-work list. Assume new structures, additions, change of use, and most mechanical/plumbing/electrical projects must go through DHBC/county review unless the inspector expressly agrees otherwise. Special inspection requirements do not automatically apply to R-3 occupancies or simple structures lacking complex systems, but those exceptions govern inspection scope rather than the need for a permit. Verify limitations with the inspector.
