When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for West Lafayette
A building permit is required for any new construction, any structural change to an existing building, and electrical work.
- Exempt Reroofing does not require a permit unless structural materials are being replaced
- Exempt Cosmetic remodel work does not require a permit; structural remodel work does
- Exempt Fences do not require a permit, though setback, easement, and HOA restrictions may still apply

- Permits are reviewed for zoning compliance, building codes, green-space requirements, stormwater drainage, contractor bonding, and occupancy. Compliance with current Indiana codes and the Unified Zoning Ordinance.
- Owner-builder
- If you have a general contractor, only the GC bond and state plumbing license verification are needed. If you act as your own GC, you must supply subcontractor and bond information.
- Contractor requirements
- General contractors must carry a $25,000 bond and subcontractors $5,000 per trade. Plumbers also need Indiana plumbing license verification.
