When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Latah County
A building permit is required for all construction in unincorporated Latah County. Residential accessory structures (sheds, playhouses) less than 200 square feet may be exempt if they comply with local zoning; confirm with the Building Department before proceeding.

- Permit validity
- Permit becomes invalid if work is not commenced within 180 days of issuance. Permit becomes void if work is suspended or abandoned for 180 consecutive days. A permit extension or renewal may be requested.
- Owner-builder
- Owner-builders must register with the Idaho Contractors Board if the project value exceeds $2,000.
- Contractor requirements
- All contractors performing construction work valued at $2,000 or more must register with the Idaho Contractors Board. Registration requires proof of liability insurance ($300,000 minimum). Electrical, plumbing, and HVAC contractors must hold valid state licenses issued by the Idaho Division of Occupational & Professional Licenses (DOPL).

Typical processing: 2-5 business days for minor work (repairs, alterations); 5-10 business days for residential new construction; 2-4 weeks for commercial or complex projects.

- 09 Respond to any correction comments and submit revised documents if required.
- 10 Pay remaining permit fees and obtain permit issuance before starting work.
- 11 Post permit on-site in a visible location throughout construction.
