When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Grady County
County Code Enforcement issues permits required by county building code ordinances. Persons doing any business in the building trades in unincorporated portions of the county must obtain permits. Any building, roof, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, or gas work must be submitted and approved before work begins.
Note: No public Grady County exempt-work list found. County publishes contractor-registration exemption for owners working on their own premises in limited circumstances, but not a general permit exemption list.

Specialty contractors making their first application must meet with Mr. Harrison. Georgia state licensure rules apply, including the residential contractor threshold over $2,500.

Confirm the property is in unincorporated Grady County and contact Code Enforcement if project-specific direction is needed. The department posts walk-in hours for the building official and appointment availability.

Complete the applicable permit application before starting work. The residential housing requirements form states the building permit application must be submitted and approved by Code Enforcement prior to doing any work.

Assemble the required supporting materials including septic approval, recorded deed and plat, 911 address application, house plan review materials, energy code form, site plan, dig number, and separate roofing, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and gas permit applications as applicable.
