When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Bristol
Building permits are required for all construction work within the City of Bristol as enforced by the Florida Building Code.
Note: Applicants should use Florida Building Code exemptions only as a baseline and confirm whether separate city planning, zoning, floodplain, sign, or mobile-home approvals still apply.

- Building code
- Florida Building Code, 8th Edition (2023), effective December 31, 2023
- Owner-builder
- Owner-builders must comply with applicable city and state requirements.
- Contractor requirements
- Contractors must hold valid Florida construction licenses as required by state law.
Application process
Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Confirm the parcel is inside Bristol city limits rather than in unincorporated Liberty County.
- 02 Contact City Hall or the building inspector for current submittal instructions, required supporting documents, fee calculation, and payment options.
- 03 For development projects, submit the city's Development Permit Application before beginning any work.
- 04 Use the city's iWorQ portal to select the correct permit type: single-family, supplemental, development, mobile home, or electrical/mechanical.
- 05 Search for the property and contractor in the portal, complete the application, upload required files, sign, and submit.
- 06 Schedule inspections through City Hall or directly with the building inspector during regular business hours.
