When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Wauchula
Wauchula's LDC Article 8 states a building permit is required prior to construction or alteration and it is unlawful to commence excavation, construction, or alteration until the Development Director or Building Official has issued the permit.
Note: Use Florida Building Code exemptions as the baseline, but confirm whether Wauchula still requires zoning, sign-off, historic, floodplain, or access review for the project.
- Detailed description of the work

- Owner-builder
- Owner-builder requirements apply under Florida law.

Application process
Typical processing: Not published by the city; applicants should contact Community Development for timing.
- 01 Confirm the property is inside Wauchula city limits and not in unincorporated Hardee County.
- 02 Contact Wauchula Community Development to identify what city-side approvals apply. The city lists building permit sign-offs, sign permits, historic preservation approvals, variances, special exceptions, rezoning, and annexations among its regular functions.
- 03 Complete the city's construction sign-off form. The published form calls for a detailed description of the work, property address, property owner and applicant information, parcel number, current and future use, zoning and flood-zone review, setbacks, and signatures.
- 04 Provide the city-required backup documents listed on the form: property card, site plan to scale, survey if necessary, letter of authorization if necessary, and the signed form.
- 05 If construction location must be verified for setbacks, stake the area of construction and arrange the city inspection referenced in the form before proceeding.
- 06 After city review is complete and the city confirms no code violations exist on the property, pick up the paperwork and take it to the Hardee County Building Department for issuance of the building permit.
- 07 Complete county permit review, pay county fees, and obtain final permit issuance before starting regulated work.
Typical processing time: Not published by the city; applicants should contact Community Development for timing.
