When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Calhoun County
A building permit is required for residential, commercial, trade, roof, and mobile home work in unincorporated Calhoun County.
Note: Use Florida Building Code permit exemptions only after confirming the project does not also trigger county zoning, floodplain, septic, driveway, or culvert approvals.

- Florida Building Code, 2023 (8th Edition), effective December 31, 2023. Note: Some county forms still reference the 2017 6th Edition; applicants should follow the current statewide code.
- Owner-builder
- The county publishes an Owner Builder Disclosure Statement citing Florida Statute 489.103. Owner-builders may act under the exemption for their own use or occupancy and may not build or substantially improve for sale or lease.
- Contractor requirements
- Contractors must provide registration materials including driver's license, general liability insurance with Calhoun County named as certificate holder, copy of state license, and proof of workers compensation insurance.

- 01 Confirm the parcel is in unincorporated Calhoun County rather than inside the City of Blountstown or Town of Altha.
- 02 Select the correct county form set: residential, commercial, electrical, plumbing, gas, mechanical, roof, or mobile home.
- 03 Submit the completed application by email or in person with plans and supporting documents.
- 04 Provide contractor registration materials if the contractor is not already registered with the county, including driver's license, general liability insurance naming Calhoun County as certificate holder, copy of state license, and proof of workers compensation insurance.
- 05 Provide project-specific items such as energy forms, 911 address certificate, site plan, septic/environmental health approval or sewer/water tap receipt, and flood documentation if applicable.
- 06 Respond to any plan review comments, pay any required fees, and obtain permit issuance before starting work.
- 07 Call in inspections at least 24 hours before the requested inspection date and obtain final approval.
