City of Littleton (Jefferson County portion)

Littleton states building permits are required to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change occupancy of a building or structure and to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert, or replace electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing systems; all fences and decks require a building permit.

Note: A consolidated Littleton exemption list was not clearly surfaced on the main permit page reviewed. Because Littleton expressly requires permits for all fences and decks and broadly for most building/trade work, applicants should confirm any claimed exemption directly with the Building Division.

Building code

Littleton Building Division newsletters state the city moved to the 2024 International Codes effective January 1, 2025, with city-approved amendments available on the city website.

Permit validity

Permit expires if work is not commenced within 180 days or if work is suspended/abandoned for 180 days; one 180-day extension may be requested in writing before expiration; issued permits are valid for no more than 365 days from issuance date.

Owner-builder

Homeowners who reside in the structure may apply; the city states they may act as general contractor only on owner-occupied detached single-family residences and must do the work themselves, with licensed contractors required for work they do not perform.

Contractor requirements

Contractors must be currently licensed with the City of Littleton; the city publishes contractor licensing guidance separately.
