When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Pocahontas
Required to erect, alter, or enlarge any structure; also required when installing, altering, repairing, or replacing regulated electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing work.
- Permit application, plot plan in two copies, contractor state license copy, and other construction documents listed on the application checklist.
- Building code
- Arkansas Fire Prevention Code and other applicable state and city building codes.
- Permit validity
- Permit becomes void if no work has started for 180 days or if construction stalls for 180 days.
- Owner-builder
- Homeowner may perform work on primary residence without a license, but permits and inspections are still required.
- Contractor requirements
- Proof of licensing is required by all contractors to obtain permits.
Application process
Application → plan check → issuance → inspection → final
- 01 Fill out the permit application and return it to 410 N Marr St or email it to codeenforce@cityofpocahontas.com.
- 02 Include a plot plan in two copies, drawn to scale, showing building size and location, setbacks, off-street parking, and other required details.
- 03 Work must comply with the Arkansas Fire Prevention Code or other applicable state and city building codes.
- 04 Once approved, the contact on the application is called and notified of the fee.
- 05 Permits are picked up at Pocahontas City Hall and paid by cash or check.
- 06 Contractors must leave a copy of Arkansas state licenses if not already on file.

- Inspection hours
- Inspections are made the following business day after request.
Typical sequence: Inspections must be requested and passed before insulation or finish materials cover work. Final inspections are required before occupancy. Commercial or industrial permits also require a Certificate of Occupancy application before final inspections.
If an inspection fails, time is allowed to correct issues, then a reinspection must be requested.
