When a permit is required
Permit triggers and exempt work for Yuma
A building permit and inspection are generally required for new construction, remodels, electrical work, mechanical work, and plumbing work. Some minor activities do not require permits.
Note: Consult with the City of Yuma Building Safety Division regarding which activities may be exempt from permit requirements.

- 2024 International Building Code (IBC), 2024 International Residential Code (IRC), 2024 International Existing Building Code (IEBC), and 2024 International Property Maintenance Code (IPMC), effective November 3, 2025. New permit applications submitted after February 1, 2026 must use the 2024 codes.

- Owner-builders may perform work on their own property subject to permit and inspection requirements.
