Shower Niche — Sizes, Placement, and Waterproofing Guide

2 min read

A shower niche is a recessed shelf built into a shower wall that provides storage for soap, shampoo, and other bath products without projecting into the shower space.

What It Is

A shower niche is formed by framing an opening between wall studs — or cutting into an existing wall — and waterproofing the interior cavity so it can hold water without damaging the wall structure behind it. The niche is then tiled or lined with a prefabricated insert to create a usable shelf within the wall thickness.

Because the niche is set into the wall, it keeps the shower interior clear of protruding shelving, reduces corners that collect soap residue, and provides a built-in, finished look. Proper waterproofing is critical: a niche that leaks at the back or sides can cause hidden moisture damage in the wall framing.

Types

Custom-framed niches are built from scratch during shower construction, waterproofed with a waterproofing membrane system, and tiled to match the shower walls. Prefabricated niche inserts are pre-made stainless steel, PVC, or foam board frames that are installed into the framed opening before tile and provide a ready-made waterproof shell. Recessed shelf systems — sometimes called floating niches — are surface-mounted and do not require wall penetration.

Where It Is Used

Shower niches are used in tiled showers, walk-in showers, and shower pan enclosures. They are most commonly located on the non-plumbing wall (opposite or perpendicular to the showerhead) between studs at a convenient reaching height, roughly 48–60 inches from the floor.

How to Identify One

A shower niche appears as a rectangular or arched opening set into the tile surface of the shower wall, with a tiled or solid-surface interior shelf. It has no door or cover and is open to the shower interior.

Replacement

Niches rarely need full replacement, but leaks behind the niche require removing tile, repairing or replacing the waterproofing membrane, and retiling. A prefabricated insert that has cracked or corroded can be replaced by removing the surrounding tile and installing a new insert.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shower Niche — FAQ

How deep is a standard shower niche?
Most shower niches are 3.5 inches deep, which matches the interior space between standard 2x4 wall studs. This depth fits most shampoo and body wash bottles. If the shower wall is built with 2x6 studs or has extra furring, the niche can be made deeper.
Can a shower niche go on any wall?
No. A niche should only be placed on non-exterior walls and walls that do not contain plumbing or electrical runs in the cavity. Exterior walls must not be penetrated for niches because doing so eliminates insulation and creates a moisture pathway. Always confirm the stud cavity is clear before cutting.
Does a shower niche need a curb or lip?
A small slope toward the shower interior or a slight front lip is recommended so water drains out rather than pooling at the back. Many prefabricated inserts include a built-in slope. In a custom tiled niche, the tile setter should pitch the floor of the niche slightly toward the shower.
How do I waterproof a shower niche?
The back wall and floor of the niche must be waterproofed with the same system used for the rest of the shower — typically a liquid membrane, sheet membrane, or prefabricated foam niche insert. The corners where the niche walls meet must be reinforced with fabric tape embedded in the membrane. The niche must be continuously waterproofed and connected to the surrounding shower waterproofing layer.
Can a shower niche be added to an existing shower?
Yes, but it requires removing tile in the target area, opening the wall to confirm stud layout and cavity contents, framing the niche, waterproofing, and retiling. It is a significant partial demolition project. Prefabricated surface-mounted shelves are a simpler alternative that avoids wall penetration.
