A range heating element is the electric resistance element that produces heat for cooking on an electric range surface.

What It Is

When electricity flows through the element, resistance creates heat that is transferred to cookware directly or through a smooth glass top. It is one of the most wear-prone parts on an electric range because it cycles on and off constantly.

Types

Common types include exposed coil surface elements, radiant smooth-top elements under ceramic glass, dual-size elements, and specialty warming zones. Oven bake and broil elements are related parts, but they are separate components from the surface element.

Where It Is Used

Surface heating elements are used on electric ranges and cooktops in kitchens, apartments, and accessory units. They sit on the cooking surface and connect to controls, limiters, and wiring beneath the top.

How to Identify One

Look for a coil burner or the circular glowing zone under a glass top when active. Slow heating, uneven heat, visible damage, burning smells, or a burner that stays cold even though the indicator light is on can point to a failed element or switch.

Replacement

Replacement usually means matching the exact element size, wattage, and connector style to the appliance model. If the receptacle block, wiring, or infinite switch is heat-damaged, those parts may need replacement at the same time.

Why is one burner on my electric range not heating?

The surface element may have failed, but the problem can also be a bad receptacle, loose wiring, or a defective control switch. Coil elements are relatively easy to test by swapping with a matching burner. Smooth-top units usually need model-specific diagnosis.

Can I replace a coil burner myself?

Many homeowners can replace a plug-in coil element safely after disconnecting power and confirming the receptacle is not scorched. If the socket is burned or the wiring insulation is damaged, the repair goes beyond a simple element swap. At that point a technician is the safer choice.

Why does a smooth-top burner cycle on and off?

That cycling is normal to regulate temperature and protect the glass top from overheating. What is not normal is a burner that never gets fully hot, heats only part of the ring, or shuts off erratically. Those symptoms suggest an element or control problem.

Should I keep using a cracked or sparking element?

No. A damaged element can arc, overheat surrounding parts, and damage cookware or the range top. Turn off power to that burner and arrange for replacement before using it again.
