EIFS Mesh - EIFS Wall Reinforcement and Repair Guide

2 min read

EIFS mesh is the fiberglass reinforcing mesh embedded in the base coat of an exterior insulation and finish system to strengthen the wall surface.

What It Is

In an EIFS wall, rigid insulation board is attached to the substrate and then covered with a base coat and finish coat. The mesh sits within that base coat to improve impact resistance, control cracking, and help the lamina act as a reinforced skin over the insulation.

Different mesh weights are used for different performance needs. Higher-impact areas may receive heavier mesh or multiple layers, while standard wall fields often use lighter mesh intended for the proprietary EIFS system.

Types

Common types include standard EIFS reinforcing mesh, intermediate-weight mesh, high-impact mesh, corner mesh, and accessory strips used around openings and transitions.

Where It Is Used

EIFS mesh is used on EIFS-clad exterior walls, especially in the reinforced base-coat layer over foam insulation at wall fields, corners, reveals, and impact-prone lower sections.

How to Identify One

You usually see EIFS mesh only during installation or when damaged EIFS is cut open. It appears as an alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh embedded in the base coat rather than exposed on the surface.

Replacement

Replacement is needed when the mesh is missing, poorly embedded, damaged in impact repairs, or exposed by cracks and delamination. A durable fix usually means rebuilding the EIFS layers in the affected area, not just patching the finish coat.

Frequently Asked Questions

EIFS Mesh — FAQ

Is EIFS mesh the same as stucco mesh?
No. EIFS mesh is typically fiberglass reinforcement embedded in a synthetic base coat, while traditional stucco often uses metal lath or other reinforcement behind cement plaster. They belong to different wall systems.
What happens if EIFS mesh is missing?
The wall surface becomes much more vulnerable to cracking, impact damage, and localized failure of the base coat. The finish alone is not enough to provide the intended reinforcement.
Can exposed EIFS mesh be painted over?
No. Exposed mesh usually means the surface layers have failed or worn thin. The area should be repaired with compatible EIFS materials so the mesh is properly re-embedded.
Does EIFS mesh come in different strengths?
Yes. EIFS manufacturers use different mesh weights for standard walls, corners, and high-impact zones. The repair material should match the system requirements rather than using a random fiberglass fabric.
