Dimple Mat - Foundation Drainage and Wall Protection Guide

1 min read

A dimple mat is a molded plastic drainage sheet installed against below-grade walls to create a water-relief and protection gap.

What It Is

Dimple mat is a foundation drainage product with raised dimples that hold the sheet slightly off the wall surface. That air space helps relieve hydrostatic pressure, protect waterproofing layers from backfill damage, and guide water down toward the footing drain.

It is not a structural repair and it is not the same thing as the waterproof coating itself. Instead, it is usually one layer in a below-grade moisture-control assembly that may also include a membrane, footing drain, filter fabric, and site grading work.

Where It Is Used

Dimple mat is used on exterior foundation walls, retaining walls, basement walls, crawlspace walls, and under some slabs where a drainage plane is needed.

How to Identify One

It appears as a black or dark plastic sheet with a regular pattern of raised bumps or dimples. During excavation work it is visible on the exterior face of the foundation before the trench is backfilled.

Replacement

Replacement is needed when the mat is torn, crushed, improperly terminated, or installed without the drainage path it depends on. If water is still entering the basement, the fix may also require clearing footing drains or correcting the underlying waterproofing strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dimple Mat — FAQ

Is dimple mat the same as foundation waterproofing?
No. Dimple mat is mainly a drainage and protection layer, while waterproofing is the coating or membrane that resists water entry. Good foundation systems often use both.
What does dimple mat do on a basement wall?
It creates a path for water to move downward instead of pressing directly against the wall and it protects the waterproofing layer from backfill damage. That helps the footing drain do its job.
How do I know if dimple mat has failed?
You usually find problems during excavation, when the sheet is torn, crushed, missing at seams, or terminated incorrectly. Ongoing basement seepage can also suggest the drainage assembly is not working as intended.
Can dimple mat fix an existing wet basement by itself?
Not usually. If the wall is already leaking, the repair often also involves membrane work, crack repair, footing drain correction, or grading improvements. The mat helps manage water, but it does not solve every moisture pathway alone.
