Download the Building Permit Application and Building Permit Information Sheet from tekoawa.com/building-permits or call City Hall at (509) 284-3861 to have forms provided.
Complete the application and gather supporting documents: construction plans, site plan as applicable to project scope.
Submit completed application and documents to City Hall, 419 Washington Street, or mail to P.O. Box 927.
Building inspector reviews the application and plans.
Pay permit fees at City Hall.
Permit is issued; post on job site.

General Requirements

Building permits are required for all new construction, additions, structural repairs, roofing replacements, mechanical and plumbing work, and demolition projects.

Building code: 2021 International Building Code (IBC), 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) with Washington State amendments (effective March 15, 2024). Tekoa is required to enforce Washington State Building Code per RCW 19.27.050.
Contractor requirements: All contractors performing paid construction work must be registered with Washington State L&I (RCW 18.27). Registration numbers must appear on permit applications, vehicles, and advertising. Bond requirements (2026): General Contractor $30,000; Specialty Contractor $15,000.

Work That Does NOT Require a Permit

Tekoa follows Washington State minimum exemptions under RCW 19.27.060(7): the standard $1,500 residential minor work exemption applies (no structural work, no bedroom creation, no reduction of egress/light/air/ventilation; does not cover electrical, plumbing, or mechanical work).
