Washington Updated March 2026

Important: Klickitat County issues building permits for properties in unincorporated areas of the county. If your property is inside an incorporated city (Goldendale, White Salmon, or Bingen), select your city below — that city's building department or contracted authority handles your permits, not the county. Klickitat County is notable for its fragmented permit authority: each city and the county uses different permit systems and building officials.

Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area (CRGNSA): White Salmon, Bingen, and the southern portion of unincorporated Klickitat County fall within the CRGNSA. In Klickitat County specifically, you must obtain Gorge Commission approval sequentially before applying for the county building permit — this is different from other counties where review is concurrent. This can add significant time to the permitting process. Start at gorgecommission.org.
