General Requirements

A building permit is required for all construction within the Town of Westport.

  • Legal description of property
  • Name and address of designer
  • Intended use of building
  • Two complete sets of plans and specifications
  • Plot plan showing location and dimensions of all buildings and improvements
  • Setbacks, grades, easements, water courses
  • Plans drawn to minimum scale of 1/4 inch to 1 foot

Work That Does NOT Require a Permit

  • Agricultural buildings without electrical or plumbing services (exempt from building permit but not from electrical/plumbing permits if services added)
  • Repairs for maintenance not involving structural portions, room arrangement, light/ventilation, exits, fire protection, or exterior aesthetic appearance
  • Minor repairs as determined by Building Inspector
  • Fences 6 feet or under (over 6 feet requires building permit and engineering)

Important: Exempt from building permit does not mean exempt from other requirements.

Typical inspection sequence: Inspections required throughout construction. Certificate of Use and Occupancy required before occupying new buildings. Temporary certificates may be issued for portions that can be safely occupied.
