Application Process

  1. Contact Stockton Town Hall or the Town Clerk to confirm current building permit intake.
  2. Prepare an application accompanied by a plat drawn to scale showing actual lot dimensions, size and location of existing buildings, buildings to be erected, adjacent structures, and other information needed to enforce Town code.
  3. Submit through Stockton Town Hall.
  4. Complete any planning or conditional-use/site-plan approvals that must occur before permit issuance.
  5. Receive written permit from the Building Inspector before starting work.
  6. Complete required inspections through the town's building department/inspector process.

General Requirements

Stockton Town Code requires a written permit before construction, alteration, repair, removal, or occupancy of a structure, except where work is minor in character as defined or determined by the Building Inspector. Temporary uses incidental to construction also require a permit.

Permit validity
Permits expire and become null and void if work is not commenced within 180 days, or if work is suspended or abandoned for 180 days. Renewal fee is one-half of the new permit fee if no changes apply.
Building code
Stockton Town Code adopts the International Building Code as adopted by the State; adopts IRC Table R301.2(1) as part of state adopted codes; adopts the International Fire Code as adopted by the State; and adopts other building, residential, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, energy, and natural gas codes established and adopted by the State.
Contractor requirements
Utah state licensing applies; Stockton's public site did not publish a separate contractor-license checklist.

Work That Does NOT Require a Permit

  • Non-structural changes to a building, such as siding, roofing of not more than three layers, and replacement in kind such as doors and windows
  • Cosmetic repairs and maintenance of electrical, mechanical, and plumbing
  • Demolition of accessory buildings known to contain no asbestos
  • Accessory buildings not exceeding 200 square feet in size
  • Retaining walls not over 4 feet in height
