Application Process

  1. Confirm project scope and whether the work is inside Elgin city limits.
  2. Create or reuse a My Government Online account and select Elgin as the jurisdiction.

Any owner or authorized agent who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert, or replace electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing systems, requires a permit. Examples: foundation repair, roof replacement, window replacement, siding replacement, solar panels, service upgrades, line repairs, generators, bathroom upgrades, irrigation, flatwork, patios, decks, pools, storage units, HVAC replacement, water-heater replacement, and remodels or additions.

Permit validity

Fees

Minimum permit fee

Plan check fee

Reinspection fee
Residential reinspection fees: $138.25 for first and second subsequent inspections; $163.25 for third and additional inspections. Commercial reinspection fees: $186.25 and $211.25 respectively.
Penalty (no permit)
Work Without Permit (W/O Permit): double the permit fee or $1,000, whichever is less.
Payment note
The city fee schedule lists a 3% credit-card processing fee. All fees must be paid before permits are issued or before an item is scheduled for hearing, whichever applies.
