Application Process

  1. Prepare permit materials in PDF format. Clayton requires the application, plans, truss drawings, site plan, and supporting documents as separate PDFs.
  2. Submit documents electronically to permitsubmittals@townofclaytonnc.org. Clayton states that, effective July 1, 2025, Development Services requires documents to be submitted electronically via email, with paper accepted only in person.
  3. Use the town's e-Permits system for registered-contractor workflows, HVAC change-outs, and single-trade permits where applicable.
  4. Wait for review comments from staff.
  5. Resubmit revisions directly to the reviewer if changes are required.
  6. Pay fees. Clayton states that, except for building trade permits, fees must be paid before staff starts review.
  7. Receive permit issuance and schedule inspections through the town system or inspection request line.
