Application Process
- Determine whether the project falls under Troutman Option 1 or Option 2.
- For Option 1 projects such as residential new construction, additions, accessory structures, manufactured home setup, non-residential interior upfit, change in use, signs, temporary events, retaining walls, and swimming pools, apply through the Iredell County CSS portal.
- Iredell County forwards the application to Troutman staff for zoning review and collects required fees before issuing the permit.
- For Option 2 applications such as rezonings, site plan review, variances, plats, flood development permits, high density development permits, and temporary use or mobile food vendor permits, apply directly through Troutman's CitizenServe portal or submit PDF forms by email or paper to Town Hall.
- For new non-residential and multifamily construction, contact Troutman Planning Department before permitting because additional review is required.
- After approvals, pay fees and request inspections through the county system for county-issued permit types.

Work That Does NOT Require a Permit
- State-law permit exemptions under NCGS 160D-1110(c) apply to county-issued building permits in Troutman
- Qualifying replacement of windows, doors, exterior siding, and certain porch and deck surface components may be exempt under the state statute
- Certain like-for-like water heater replacements in one- and two-family dwellings may be exempt if all state conditions are met
- Work still requiring Troutman zoning, floodplain, sign, site plan, event, or other municipal approval is not exempt just because a state building permit may not be required
Important: State exemptions for building permits do not eliminate separate Troutman municipal approvals that may be required.
