Application Process

Work That Does NOT Require a Permit
- Work in a single-family residence, farm building, or commercial building costing $40,000 or less may be exempt unless it involves load-bearing work, addition or change of plumbing, heating/air/electrical systems, use of non-code materials, or other listed statutory triggers
- Replacement of windows, doors, exterior siding, and porch/exterior deck pickets, railings, stair treads, and decking is specifically exempted by state law when the rest of the statutory exception is satisfied
- Certain like-for-like water heater replacements in one- or two-family dwelling units may be performed without a permit if done by a properly licensed person and all statutory conditions are met
- Routine maintenance that does not meet statutory triggers for building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, zoning, sign, or fire permits remains exempt
Important: Exempt from building permit does not mean exempt from Statesville zoning, sign, utility, or fire approvals. Confirm edge cases with the county and city departments before proceeding.
