General Requirements

Permits are required when the use of property changes, for new residential, commercial, or industrial construction, for a new business in an existing structure, and for signs, fences, yard sales, some special events, and accessory structures such as garages and greenhouses.   • Replacement of windows, doors, exterior siding, and porch or exterior deck pickets, railings, stair treads, and decking within the statutory exemption conditions
  • In one- or two-family dwellings, replacement water heater connections meeting the specific same-location, same-or-less-capacity statutory conditions
  • In one- or two-family dwellings, repair or replacement of electrical lighting fixtures or devices such as receptacles and switches by a properly licensed electrical contractor when the replacement is same voltage and same or lower amperage
