Application Process

General Requirements
A building permit is required for all construction within the City of Pittsfield.

Work That Does NOT Require a Permit
- One-story detached accessory structures (tool sheds, playhouses) not exceeding 120 sq ft
- Fences not exceeding 7 feet in height
- Retaining walls not over 4 feet high (unless supporting surcharge or impounding liquids)
- Water tanks supported on grade, capacity not exceeding 5,000 gallons
- Sidewalks and driveways not more than 30 inches above adjacent grade
- Interior finish work: painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops
- Playground equipment accessory to a detached one- or two-family dwelling
- Window awnings in Groups R-3 and U occupancies
- Prefabricated above-ground pools under 24 inches deep and under 5,000 gallons
- Decks not exceeding 200 sq ft in area and not more than 30 inches above grade (Pittsfield local addition)
Important: 780 CMR 105.2 exemptions apply statewide. Always confirm edge cases with the Building Commissioner before proceeding.
