Application Process

  6. Fee is calculated and charged; pay online or in person.
  7. Permit issued when all approvals are in order; permit card must be posted at the job site.

General Requirements

Work That Does NOT Require a Permit

  • One-story detached accessory structures (tool sheds, playhouses) not exceeding 120 sq ft
  • Fences not exceeding 7 feet in height
  • Retaining walls not over 4 feet high (unless supporting surcharge or impounding liquids)
  • Water tanks supported on grade, capacity not exceeding 5,000 gallons
  • Sidewalks and driveways not more than 30 inches above adjacent grade
  • Interior finish work: painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops
  • Playground equipment accessory to a detached one- or two-family dwelling
  • Window awnings in Groups R-3 and U occupancies
  • Prefabricated above-ground pools under 24 inches deep and under 5,000 gallons
  • Decks not exceeding 200 sq ft in area and not more than 30 inches above grade (Pittsfield local addition)

Important: 780 CMR 105.2 exemptions apply statewide. Always confirm edge cases with the Building Commissioner before proceeding.
