General Requirements

A building permit is required for all construction within the Town of Dalton.

Permit validity

Work That Does NOT Require a Permit

  • One-story detached accessory structures not exceeding 120 sq ft
  • Fences not exceeding 7 feet in height
  • Retaining walls not over 4 feet high
  • Water tanks supported on grade, capacity not exceeding 5,000 gallons
  • Sidewalks and driveways not more than 30 inches above adjacent grade
  • Interior finish work: painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops
  • Playground equipment accessory to a detached one- or two-family dwelling
  • Window awnings in Groups R-3 and U occupancies
  • Prefabricated above-ground pools under 24 inches deep and under 5,000 gallons
  • Decks not exceeding 200 sq ft and not more than 30 inches above grade

Important: Same as the statewide 780 CMR 105.2 exemptions. Per Town of Dalton Administration and Enforcement: no building or structure may be erected without permit, with exceptions per 780 CMR 105.2.
