General Requirements

Venice states a permit is required any time an owner or authorized agent intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, change occupancy, or install, alter, or replace regulated electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing systems.

Permit validity
Venice states every permit becomes invalid unless work is commenced within 6 months after issuance, or if work is suspended or abandoned for 6 months after commencement. Work is considered active when the permit receives an approved inspection within 180 days.

Venice announced that effective April 1, 2025, it rescinded Resolution 2022-07, which had provided a temporary 30 percent reduction in valuation-based building permit fees, and that storm-damage permit fees would no longer be waived. Both Sarasota County mobility/impact fees and City of Venice impact fees may apply to qualifying development.
