Application Process

  1. Confirm the property is inside Layton city limits.
  2. Complete the city's building permit application with tax folio, project description, estimated value, contractor/license information, owner information, and any design professional information.
  3. Provide separate permit information for electrical, plumbing, mechanical, signs, wells, pools, boilers, tanks, air conditioning, and similar work where applicable.
  4. Record a Notice of Commencement when Florida law requires it.
  5. Submit plans/specifications and respond to any additional information requests.
  6. Obtain inspections and final approval.

Typical processing time: Within 15 working days after plans/specifications are submitted and accepted, the applicant will be notified that the permit is ready or that additional information is required.

General Requirements

Any owner or authorized agent intending to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, change occupancy, or install/alter regulated electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing systems must first apply to the building official, pay the fee, and obtain the permit.

If the permit is not purchased or requested additional information is not provided within 60 days after notice, the application/permit becomes null and void.

Work That Does NOT Require a Permit

  • Ordinary minor repairs not exceeding $1,500 in value, including labor and materials, may be made with the approval of the building official without a permit.
