Application Process
- Confirm the parcel is inside Ocala city limits.
- Register the contractor with the city if applying as a contractor; contractor registry is required to apply for permits.
- Submit the application in person at the Customer Service Center or through eTRAKiT.
- Upload plans and supporting documents into ProjectDox when electronic plan review is required.
- If applying as an owner-builder, appear in person with the owner-builder packet.
- Record and upload the Notice of Commencement when required.
- Pay fees, obtain permit issuance, and schedule inspections online or by phone.
Typical processing time: No-plan-review permits typically issued within 2 business days if complete; plan-review permits typically enter first review within 10 business days, with resubmittals reviewed within 5 business days.

A permit is required for most interior and exterior work except painting and floor covering.

- The city cites Florida Statutes 489.103 and requires the owner to personally appear and sign the application; the work must be for the owner's own use and not for sale or lease.

- Contractors must provide a current Florida state license, proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation or exemption, and optional authorization letters for delegates.
Work That Does NOT Require a Permit
- Residential fences 6 feet or lower do not require a building permit, except in historic districts or for taller fences or wall-like masonry/concrete fences
Important: Most sheds, pergolas, gazebos, and other accessory structures require a permit. Impact fees, fire fees, and other project-specific charges can apply separately.
