Application Process

  1. Confirm the parcel is in unincorporated Hardee County and not inside Bowling Green, Wauchula, or Zolfo Springs city limits.
  2. Identify whether the project needs only a building permit, or also separate planning / development approvals such as a site development plan, rezoning, variance, special exception, temporary use permit, or sign certificate.
  3. Prepare the required project materials. County-published materials show applicants may need parcel information, owner / applicant information, a plat or site plan, plans and supporting documentation, and the applicable filing fee.
  4. Submit the permit package to the Hardee County Building Department and any related land use application to Hardee County Community Development / Planning and Zoning.
  5. If the project involves signage in unincorporated Hardee County, obtain a county Signage Certificate from Community Development. The county's 2024 sign application states a county sign certificate and a building permit from the Hardee County Building Department are both required where sign permits are required.
  6. Respond to county review comments, provide revised plans or supporting documents if requested, and pay the required fees before work begins.
  7. Obtain inspections and final approval. The county carefully inspects completed work for code compliance.

Any owner or authorized agent intending to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, change occupancy, or install or replace regulated electrical, gas, mechanical, plumbing, or impact-resistant work must apply to the building official and obtain the required permit.

Work started before permit: up to $1,000 plus double the fee otherwise required; Person working with no license and no permit: $1,000 per event; Stop-work order issued: $500 per day
