County Building Permits
Dawson County, MT - 2026 Building Permit Guide
How to apply for a building permit in unincorporated Dawson County, Montana. Permit authority, application steps, fees, and inspection requirements.
Permit Authority
Dawson County does not operate a certified local building code program. Most unincorporated land has no zoning and therefore no local building permit requirement. Two citizen-driven zoned subdivisions -- Highland Park and Forest Park -- require a Zoning Compliance Permit for any construction. Outside these two districts and outside incorporated city/town limits, state building permits apply for commercial and non-exempt structures; residential single-family construction is exempt from both state and local permit requirements.
